Mega Machines: The Biggest ‘Monsters’ around the Planet

Machines have really changed our lives to great extent. Work that took days is now done in hours or may be minutes. See the world's biggest/largest machines ever built on land, water and air. These machines are the real monsters.


World’s Biggest Digging Machine – Bagger 288


This is the largest digging machine (or trencher or rotating shovel) in the world. It was built by Krupp and is shown here crossing a road in Germany on the way to its destination, an open air coal mine. Although at the mine the treads are unnecessary, it was cheaper to make the machine self-propelled than to try and move it with conventional hauling equipment. Some factoids:

  • The machine is 310 feet (95 m) high and 705 feet (215 m) long (almost 2.5 football fields in length)
  • Weight is 45,500 tons (that's equivalent to a bumper to bumper line of jeeps 80 miles long)
  • It took 5 years to design and manufacture at a cost of $100 million
  • Maximum digging speed is 10 meters per minute
  • Can move more than 76,000 cubic meters of coal, rock, and earth per day




World’s Largest Self-powered Tracked- NASA Crawler-Transporter


There are two crawler-transporters used by NASA, and today they carry space shuttles — boosters and all — along with each shuttle's Mobile Launcher Platform into position. While not as large as the Bagger 288 above, the crawlers are the largest self-powered vehicles in the world, and can manage two miles per hour (compared to the Bagger's 30-some feet a minute) when unloaded.





World’s Biggest Movable Machine - Overburden Conveyor Bridge F60


The name of that epic structure is Overburden Conveyor Bridge F60 in Lichterfeld. This technological steel giant is 502 metres long, 202 metres wide, 80 metres high and 11,000 ton heavy. It was build in East Germany in 1991 by VEB TAKRAF Lauchhammer (although the GDR was manufacturing slightly lesser types since 1958). After only 13 months of operation the F60 bridge was taken out of operation for energy-political reasons. The opencast mine Klettwitz-Nord where the conveyor bridge was operating is closed. World’s Largest Telescopic Crane - Liebherr LTM 11200-9.1


The Most Powerful Mobile Crane in the World… and actually a monster of a truck. Meet Liebherr LTM 11200-9.1 – Built by the German company Liebherr Group, this colossal mobile crane has the longest telescopic boom in the world – 100 meters (328 ft)! The massive boom is in eight parts and is longer by 16 meters and stronger than the previous worlds greatest mobile crane the 1998 model LTM 1500-8.1 which had a boom of only 84 meters. (Link)





World’s Largest Truck – Terex “Titan”


When the Terex 33-19 "Titan" prototype was built in 1973, it became the largest, highest capacity haul truck in the world, a distinction it would hold for the next 25 years. The 33-19 "Titan" was an off-highway, ultra class, rigid frame, three-axle, diesel/AC electric powertrain haul truck designed by the Terex Division of General Motors and assembled at General Motors Diesel Division's London, Ontario, Canada assembly plant. Only one 33-19 "Titan" was ever produced. After 13 years in service, the 33-19 "Titan" was restored and is now preserved on static display as a tourist attraction in Sparwood, BC, Canada.

The Titan was powered by a 16-cylinder 3,300/3,000 horsepower (2,500/2,200 kW) locomotive engine with a displacement of 10,343 cubic inches (169.49 l) coupled to a EMD AR10-D14 generator. This Electro-Motive Division engine, as the 16-645E4 prime mover, was intercooled and turbocharged. The generator then powered 4 electric traction motors, one at each rear wheel. The Terex featured large 40.00x57 tires made of rubber. It is 66 feet (20 m) long and 22.6 feet (6.9 m) tall; or 56 feet (17.1 m) tall with the dump body raised.





World’s Largest Wheel Loader – LeTourneau L-2350

The L-2350 loader from LeTourneau Inc. holds the Guinness World Record for Biggest Earth Mover. Designed to center-load haul trucks with capacities of up to 400 tons, the L-2350 provides an operating payload of 160,000 pounds, a 24-foot lift height, and an 11.5-foot reach.




World's Biggest (production) Bulldozer - D575A-3SD


When it comes to bulldozing, bigger really is better. The bigger the dozer the more efficiently they work and the more aggregate they can shove. Standing 16 feet tall, 41 feet long and 24 feet wide the D575A-3SD is the king of power when it comes to shifting aggregate. World's Largest Farm Tractor – Big Bud


In 1977 the Big Bud 747 tractor was built in Havre, Montana. The tractor was built by Ron Harmon and the crew of the Northern Manufacturing Company. The tractor was built to produce 760 horsepower using a 16-cylinder Detroit Diesel engine. The tractor measures 27 feet long, 20 feet wide, and 14 feet tall. The tires were specially made by United Tire Company of Canada and are 8 feet in diameter. When the 1,000 gallon fuel tank is full the tractor tips the scales at over 100,000 pounds.

World’s Largest Transport Ship - MV Blue Marlin


MV Blue Marlin and her sister ship MV Black Marlin comprise the Marlin class of semi-submersible heavy lift ship. They were owned by Offshore Heavy Transport of Oslo, Norway from their construction, in April 2000 and November 1999 respectively, until 6 July 2001, when they were purchased by Dockwise Shipping of the Netherlands. They were designed to transport very large semi-submersible drilling rigs, which can weigh 30,000 tons and have a center of gravity around 30 meters (100 ft) above the transport ship's deck. The Marlins are equipped with 38 cabins to accommodate 60 people, a workout room, sauna, and swimming facilities.

The World’s Biggest Bonfire Ever

The_World’s_Biggest_Bonfire_Ever_06To see the world’s biggest bonfire you’ll have to visit Alesund, Norway, where wood pallets are stacked over 40 meters (131 ft) high on an artificial island.

The reason for this colossal bonfire is ‘Midsummer’ (Sankthans), an annual festival in commemoration of John the Baptist’s birth.

About 30-40 people partake in the build, and to light the structure someone must climb to the top to ignite it. If the fire doesn’t burn from top to bottom things could end badly.

This is a list of 10 unusual, strange, vintage and unstoppable snow vehicles from around the earth.


Tucker Trans Antarctic Sno-Cat


The Tucker Sno-Cat is a tracked vehicle or a family of tracked vehicles for snow conditions.

Different models have been used for expeditions in the Arctic and the Antarctic during the second half of the 20th century. It differs from other truck-sized snow vehicles, commonly known as Snowcats, by its use of four independently mounted sets of tracks. (read more at




Bombardier 12 Person Snow Coach

Joseph-Armand Bombardier, inventor of the snowmobile. Like many other inventors, Bombardier first tried as a teenager to realize his idea of an all-terrain vehicle, equally reliable on soft ground (eg, muskeg) or snow. The specific invention that made his machine of 1937 a success was the principle of steering by skis in front of a tracked drive. A decade later, based partly on wartime research, he made a 12-passenger machine, for which there was a small market, chiefly military. (link)

The Antarctic Snow Cruiser

The Antarctic Snow Cruiser was a vehicle designed from 1937 to 1939 under the direction of Thomas Poulter, intended to facilitate transport in Antarctica. While having several innovative features, it generally failed to operate as hoped under the difficult conditions, and was eventually abandoned in Antarctica. Rediscovered under a deep layer of snow in 1958, it later disappeared again due to shifting ice conditions.

Ford Model T Snow Vehicle

This 1921 Ford Model T was owned by rural mail carrier Harold Crabtree of Central Square, NY. The vehicle is fitted with the “Mailman’s Special” attachment to help it travel through deep snow. (link)






A test Humvee, equipped with four separate tracks for over the snow mobility, is used to support training at the Mountain Warfare Training Center, Bridgeport, Calif.



Columbia Icefield Snow Coach


Early snow coach at Athabasca Glacier. With neither suspension, air condtioning, or openable windows this was known as "Shake and Bake".




Vintage Russian Snowmobile


Unfortunately we don’t have any information about this vehicle. But, as it can be seen, it is able to move on the wheels or skis as well.




1949 Tucker Sno Cat


This is a picture of Mike's 1949 Tucker Sno-Cat taken on a day trip in Colorado.



The Snow Chopper


Two government employed mechanics in Antarctica built a "snow chopper" with junkyard parts and trash. The engine and track are from a totaled 1981 Ski-Doo Elan, and everything else from "savvy dumpster diving". This beast cost only $10 to build. (link)
